The Jewish Bar Association of Michigan is extremely concerned about the freedom and wellbeing of journalist Danny Fenster, a fellow member of the greater Detroit Jewish community, and managing editor of Frontier Myanmar. Danny was detained at Yangon International Airport on Monday May 24th, 2021, shortly before he was due to board a flight to return to the United States. We understand he has been transferred to Insein Prison in Yangon, a political prison notorious for its human rights abuses. It is unknown why Danny was detained, and he has yet been granted consular access to confirm his safety.
As attorneys, judges, and legal professionals, we have a profound interest in protecting the freedoms, safety, and human rights of our fellow citizens. The denial of his freedom is an egregious infringement of his rights. We urge the Myanmar government to release Danny immediately and unconditionally.
We also ask our members to help advocate on Danny’s behalf.  His family has created the website with updates and action items including raising awareness, signing a petition to President Biden to secure Danny’s release, contacting elected officials and those serving on the foreign affairs committee, and reaching out to any other networks available.
